In the UK, going to the pub is more than just an activity; it is an institution. Whether you run a slick city gastropub, or a cosy rural inn, it is important to have the right pub insurance policy in place. The presence of alcohol can make for some unpredictable situations, which the licensee can ultimately be held liable for. Pub insurance will protect you and your business from any compensation claims made by an employee or member of the public, as well as the building and the contents within it.

Who is Eligible for Pub Insurance?

There are a variety of venues which can be covered by a pub insurance policy, including:

  • Pubs
  • Gastro pubs
  • Wine bars
  • Late night venues
  • Nightclubs
  • Late pubs / bars with entertainment licenses
  • Members clubs
  • Function and event venues

These venues will also fall into one of three categories:

  • Standard: limited food served, alcohol focused, no entertainment provided, normal 11am – 1130pm opening hours observed.
  • Non Standard: food and alcohol of equal importance, any type of dancing, features entertainment such as bands, karaoke, singers or a DJ, and usually open later until 1am.
  • Bespoke: food, alcohol and entertainment led premises, late license typically past 1am, door staff, entry fees, entertainment includes discos/bands with a dancefloor on a regular basis.

Why Do I need Pub Insurance?

Accidents are never planned: they just happen. When you are in an environment where there is alcohol involved, it increases the chances of an accident considerably. As the licensee, you are responsible for the safety and well being of your staff and customers.

If a drunken customer falls and injures themselves, they could launch a compensation claim against you. Even if their claim is unsuccessful, the cost of mounting a legal defense can easily run into the thousands. Or if a member of staff is hurt whilst on your premises, their compensation pay out could have some serious financial implications for you and your business.

There is even the chance a fight could break out in your venue causing some damage to glasses, furniture and fruit machines, which would leave you with a hefty clean up and repair bill.

What is Pub Insurance

We know that each venue will have different requirements from its pub insurance policy, there is no such thing as one size fits all. It is all too common for people to pay for features they do not need, or worse still when they go to make a claim and find themselves to be under-insured.

Below is a list of the most common features of a pub insurance policy to consider:

  • Employer liability – This is a legal requirement if you have any employees working for you. Read more on our employer liability page
  • Public liability – Not legally required, but a sensible factor to include in your policy. This will protect you and your business from any claims made by a member of the public concerning damage to them or their property
  • Product liability – This covers you should someone suffer an illness which is a direct result of food or drink served on your premises.
  • Stock insurance – Stock can be very valuable, and as such is a very tempting target for thieves. It is important to give your insurer a realistic valuation of your stock, and keep them informed of any upcoming changes, such as having extra alcohol on the premises to prepare for the festive rush.
  • Money on premises – You will be covered up to £3,000, and anything above that would require you to have a safe fitted on the premises. If you have installed a cash machine onsite, make sure that your insurer is aware of this, and then your policy can be adjusted accordingly.
  • Dance floors – These can sometimes to be difficult to insure, but we will work with you and our partners to find the right policy for you

Other extra pub insurance policy features include:

  • Home contents insurance – if you live on the premises (e.g. above your pub) this is a good idea
  • Loss of your drink’s license
  • Loss of income protection
  • Business contents
  • Legal cover

How Do I get Cheaper Pub Insurance?

Some insurers will reduce the price on your premium if you implement enhanced security measures, such as installing CCTV, alarms or locks from a recommended company.
