This past week has seen Top Gear’s secret, and ruthlessly quick, racing driver, The Stig, get behind the wheel of a black London cab, except it was a black London cab with a difference.
The Top Gear man of mystery was driving a high performance version of a London cab that was fitted with a 400bhp Mitsubishi engine. From the outside, however, the cab looks just the same as any other London taxi, apart from a couple of bonnet pins, the larger exhaust, and the Mitsubishi steel wheels that are needed to transmit the power from the engine to the road.
The brave passenger was DJ Chris Evans. It is also reported that Evans is set to make an appearance at this year’s Top Gear Live in a special edition of the shows feature, Star in a Reasonably Priced Car.
The Stig had to negotiate service ramps and the ExCel’s underground car park whilst power-sliding through the show halls and across the central boulevard. Evans was given an exciting, riotous ride around the 100,000 square metre ExCel London venue.
The cab is said to accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and is fitted with an advanced selectable centre differential. This enables the cab to perform the necessary stunts in the hands of the fearless driver. Whether the cab has been insured by some form of taxi insurance is another matter however.
The cab is set to feature in Top Gear’s annual live show, Top Gear Live at London’s ExCel towards the end of November from the 24th to the 27th.
The show is also set to visit the NEC in Birmingham between the 11th and 13th November. The show has been billed as “The ultimate Top Gear experience”, and visitors can expect to see all the action packed fun of the TV show rolled into one single event.
