Britain Prepares for a Big Motorhome Summer

Image of CampervanYou may think that camping in the UK during the summer months is just a case of tootling down the M5 to whichever spot on the South or North coasts of Devon or Cornwall takes your fancy, but that’s definitely not true for summer 2014. As May turns into June, motorhome organisations and campsites across the UK are preparing for what could well be one of the biggest summers of motorhome activity in many years…

Le Tour de Angleterre

One of the biggest events attracting campers this year is the Tour de France, which, if you haven’t heard, is hitting the humble roads of Yorkshire, Cambridge and London this summer. Stages one, two and three will be held in the UK, and such an event is guaranteed to attract campers from all over the world, not just from the UK.

The latest reports claim that up to one million people could descend on the roads in support of Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish while they vie for the coveted yellow jersey. Therefore, while some campsites may still have a number of vacancies, it’s expected that prices will increase as it gets later in the year, and it’s possible that they will all be fully booked well before the race starts in July.

British Cycling Events

On top of the Tour, the routes for three other cycling events in the UK have recently been announced and are sure to bring in large camping crowds. The first two, L’Eroica Brittania and The Prudential Ride London will see thousands of keen cyclists, many of whom will want to camp up near the start lines in the Peak District and Surrey respectively.

The professional equivalent will be the Tour of Britain, and it has just been announced that the route will follow the South of England this year. Cities such as Bath, Wells and Bristol will see the action and the deciding stage is going to take place in Exeter. Haytor, one of the most infamous climbs in the UK, is likely to see the winning move so the site is sure to attract motorhome owning fans for at least a night.

Festival Season Approaches

Alongside the sporting drama there is also a number of music festivals set to make the headlines over the summer. While motorhome owning fans of Glastonbury are certain to cruise the lanes of Somerset as they do every year, there are also a number of other music festivals which are likely to attract motorhome and campervan owners.

It’s just been announced that one of the biggest bands in the UK, Pete Doherty and Carl Barat’s ‘The Libertines’, will be reforming for a one-off gig in Hyde Park this summer. Alongside this, smaller festivals such as V Festival and Reading Festival are getting bigger every year. Motorhome owners really are spoilt for choice this year, providing they’re covered for festival parking on their motorhome insurance!

Football World Cup

Although the 2014 FIFA World Cup will be held miles away from the UK in Brazil, it’s still sure to drum up a summer crowd back here in the UK. Big screens have already been announced in places such as Brighton and Manchester and it’s sure that London will also have a carnival atmosphere.

While it might be easy enough to stroll along to your local big screen to watch England’s key games, it’s also true that many will want to seek out the biggest and best atmospheres they can find. As the World Cup is held in the height of the summer, you can also be sure that there will be plenty of tourists hoping the catch their team on the screens. Campsites near you could therefore be booked up very soon if your town is hosting some big-screen action!

The summer of 2014 is set to be a festival of sporting and musical delights, which is why campsites are already preparing for the big days. Our advice is to avoid the queues, book in advance and don’t take any chances this summer, particularly if you’re looking to camp around popular festival, sporting or footballing venues in the UK!
