Types of Cover

We know that lorry insurance can be expensive, so all of our partner policies can be customised to contain your specific requirements.

As with normal vehicle insurance, there are 3 different levels of cover available:

  • Third party only
  • Third party, fire & theft
  • Comprehensive

Third party only is the cheapest choice, and the minimal legal requirement. Also, employer’s liability insurance and motor insurance are both mandatory by law.

Types of Vehicle

Lorries come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including:

  • Refrigerated trucks
  • 10 tonne HGV
  • 44 tonne lorry
  • Q Plates
  • Crew cabs
  • Classic trucks

Our partners can offer cover for lorries any weight up to 200 tonne GVWs.

  • Driver training – Advanced driving courses improve driver ability in hazardous situations

Frequently Asked Questions About Lorry Insurance

    • What type of Lorries can our Brokers Insure?
There is nothing more frustrating than spending your time filling out an insurance quote form only to find that the company you are dealing with cannot provide a policy to suit your needs. This is why we work with a range of brokers so that no matter what type of lorry you own you will be able to find a policy that not only covers everything you want but also won’t break the bank. We can also help you get in touch with a number of our brokers in case you have any specific questions or want to know more details about the policies they offer.
    • What does Lorry insurance cover?
Lorry insurance protects not only your vehicle but also the goods that you are carrying, which is extremely important as they are often worth a large amount of money. This type of insurance also helps if one of your vehicles needs to be repaired, as parts for large vehicles can cost anywhere between hundreds and thousands of pounds. Our brokers can also offer lorry insurance policies that cover your driver and your goods whether they are in the UK or abroad, meaning that if you are thinking of expanding your company or your services you won’t be held back by your insurance policy.
    • Will I receive a like-for-like replacement vehicle in the event of an accident?
Your HGV insurance, or lorry insurance, provider will offer a similar type and size vehicle if you are involved in a non-fault accident. If you wish to learn more about replacement vehicles then please do not hesitate to contact your insurer directly.
    • What will happen if I have an accident outside of working hours?
If you have an accident in your lorry outside of your working hours, then you will need to refer to your HGV or lorry insurance policy documents in order to see what can be done, and then you will need to contact your insurer and they should be able to assist you.
    • Do I need to purchase employers liability insurance?
Yes, even if you only use an employee occasionally, and on a temporary basis, you will still need to purchase employers liability insurance along with your HGV insurance policy, as this is a mandatory requirement in the UK.
    • Will my policy cover glass and windscreens?
Yes, the majority of policies do cover windscreens and glass. With some HGV and lorry insurers, claiming for a broken windscreen will not affect your no claims discount, however you should check the wording of your policy.
    • Sometimes I have to transport hazardous goods, will they be covered?
Yes, many HGV and lorry insurance brokers will indeed offer haulage policies that provide cover for carrying hazardous goods. It may be a good idea to check with your insurer however as you may instead need to take out some form of extra cover.
    • Will I be able to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle?
This will depend on your driving licence. To drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle, you will need to have passed the category C test. To drive a vehicle between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes, you will need to have passed the C1 test. In order to apply for HGV or lorry insurance you may need to prove that you are able to legally drive your particular vehicle.
