Why QuoteSearcher for Convicted Driver Insurance?
A driving conviction can happen to anyone. With busier roads, stricter enforcement, and more everyday pressures, it’s not unusual to face penalties that impact your insurance options. While a conviction may raise your premium for a time, many drivers with convictions are still able to find cover, and over time, may have opportunities to rebuild No Claims Bonus on insurer terms.
Convictions such as DR10 (drink driving), SP30 (speeding), TT99 (totting up 12+ points) or IN10 (driving without insurance) can all influence how providers assess risk. Some insurers may decline to quote, while others take a more flexible view.
At QuoteSearcher, we connect you with brokers experienced in arranging insurance for drivers with past convictions and who understand the complexities around convicted driver insurance.
Maintaining your licence and staying mobile is crucial, and the brokers we work with are experienced in helping drivers compare what different providers can offer. Our role is to connect you with them quickly and confidently, so you can explore policies that meet your needs without unnecessary stress.

Policy Features
Drivers with convictions often face higher premiums, but specialist brokers sometimes offer policies that include features relevant to your circumstances, depending on provider terms:
Legal Cover
Some policies may include legal support for certain expenses that arise after your cover begins. Find out more about Legal Cover for convicted drivers.
Breakdown Cover
Brokers may also offer policies that include roadside assistance, depending on the provider. Find out more about Breakdown Cover.
EU Cover
If you’re planning to drive abroad, some providers may offer limited or extended EU cover options. EU Cover for convicted drivers.
Protected No Claims Bonus
In some cases, you may be able to keep your NCB when switching to a convicted driver policy – this depends entirely on the provider. Each broker will explain what is available and what would apply to your policy specifically.
Why You Need Insurance
All UK motorists must be insured to drive legally. At minimum, you need Third Party Only (TPO) cover, which protects other road users if you’re involved in an incident.
Drivers with past convictions, whether related to motoring or not, can find it harder to secure insurance, as some providers take a cautious approach. However, there are brokers who work specifically with drivers who have previous convictions and can help you explore the options available.

Most Common Driving Offences
The most common driving offences in the UK are drink, speed and dangerous driving related, with the most common being:
SP30
Exceeding Statutory Limit on a Public Road
DR10
Driving Above the Legal Alcohol Limit
DR30
Failure to Provide a Specimen
CU80
Breaching Control of the Vehicle
DD40
Dangerous Driving
IN10
Using a Vehicle Uninsured Against Third Party Risks
TS10
Disobeying Traffic Light Instructions
TT99
Penalty Points Exceed 12 within 3 Years
AC10
Failing to Stop After an Accident
Ways to Lower Insurance Premium
Once approved for a policy, convicted drivers may lower their premiums with the following:
High Excess
Higher excess can mean lower premiums.
Low Mileage
Restricting mileage lowers vehicle risks. Find out more about Limited Mileage Cover.
Telematics
Installing a black box to monitor driving behaviour.
Driving Courses
Rehabilitation to improve awareness and ability.

Disqualified Driver
Disqualification means a temporary ban from driving, either due to a single serious offence or by accumulating 12 or more points within three years. The length of the ban varies:
- 6 months for 12+ points in 3 years
- 12 months if it’s your second disqualification within 3 years
- 24 months for a third disqualification
According to DVLA requirements, drivers banned for more than 56 days are usually required to apply for a new licence before returning to the road. You may also be required to retake your test or complete an extended test depending on DVLA rules. In certain circumstances, drivers may be able to apply for a reduction in their disqualification period, based on DVLA guidelines.
Declaring Convictions
Being open about your conviction history is essential when speaking to a broker. Not declaring relevant information could invalidate your policy or lead to increased premiums later.
You don’t need to declare spent convictions. Whether a conviction is considered spent depends on the sentence, your age at the time, and the length of the rehabilitation period.
Even with full disclosure, some drivers may still find premiums higher than usual. However, there are ways to potentially reduce costs, such as opting for a higher excess, reducing mileage, or installing telematics, which allow risk to be assessed based on your actual driving behaviour. Brokers can outline policies available based on your circumstances and the information you provide.
