Green Cabs for the Big Apple

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

New York has revealed its official colour of their new cabs. Known worldwide to have yellow cabs, they are now turning green in a tribute to fit in with the ‘Big Apple’ name.

Unveiled by Mayor Michael Bloomberg last weekend, the new bright green cabs are scheduled to be released on the city’s roads by June 2012

Known as ‘Boro Taxis’, the fleet of livery cabs will be allowed to pick up passengers outside of Northern Manhatten and Manhatten above East 96th and West 110th Streets. New Yorkers have said that the biggest problem with hailing a cab is outside of Manhatten, so Mayor Bloomberg hopes that the new cabs will make it easier for passengers.

Only yellow taxis were previously allowed to pick up passengers from outside Manhatten, which led to around 100,000 illegal hails happening each day. In February a law passed which allows the 7 million people living in areas outside of Manhatten to hail taxis, which led to the introduction of these new green cabs.

New York are issuing 18,000 Boro Taxi permits and in June the first 6,000 permits will become available. The permits will be valid for three years and cost $1,500 each.

Mayor Bloomberg said the new scheme will encourage “thousands” of “livery drivers” “out of the shadows and into the legal economy”. He said, “We went out to try to find something that would be recognizable…that would be distinguishable from the yellow cabs, and that would be pleasing to the eye and fit in with the city.”

The new green cabs will be equipped with roof lights signalling, credit card machines and meters, the same as yellow taxis. They will also cost the same as yellow taxis and the cost of commercial taxi insurance will also be similar.

At the beginning of April, the new mini-van style vehicle that has charging plugs for passenger’s electronics was also unveiled.

Vodafone team up with London’s Black Cabs to offer free Mobile Charging

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

As part of a £10 million advertising campaign, over 500 black taxis in London have been installed with phone chargers by Vodafone. The campaign is to plug the major improvements that the company has made to its mobile coverage in London.

The Chief Executive of Vodafone UK, Guy Laurence explained that Vodafone had made “hundreds of improvements” to increase its reliability and capacity of its London network. This is great news for the company as in February, Vodafone’s network was broken into at one of its technical facilities which affected customers’ text, data and voices services which crippled the company and its reputation. With the popularity of smartphones (e.g. Blackberrys and iPhones), its London network had also been under strain. However, the chargers in the taxis will be adaptable to charge any type of mobile phone, including hungry smartphones!

Laurence said “We are committed to offering London the best possible network”.

As well as being able to charge their phones, tourists, late night clubbers and busy businessmen will not have to get the cabbie to stop at a cash point to pay for the journey. Vodafone customers will be able to pay for their journeys with their phone by sending a simple text.

The taxis won’t be hard to miss if you want to flag one down as they will be wrapped with a union jack design made up of 2000 London street names. Vodafone plan to have many more black cabs on board with their campaign by the end of August once all of the cabs have full taxi insurance to cover their new design and chargers in the cabs.

As part of the advertising campaign, Vodafone will also be sponsoring a fleet of Heathrow Express trains.

With technology becoming even more advanced, will paying by mobile phones become the norm in the future?

Paying for Taxi Journeys with Paper and Coins could be a Thing of the Past

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Paying by paper and coins could be a thing of the past as technology becomes more innovative. You might not have to worry about getting a cab driver to find and stop at a cash point again as the electronic payment company and digital media operator VeriFone is tapping into the growing technology of near field technology and targeting London’s black cabs.

VeriFone is offering the system free to London’s licensed black cabs to improve passenger journeys and modernise the payments infrastructures in taxis. The system allows taxi drivers to easily accept credit and debit cards as it integrates with the taxi meters while also streaming digital content and advertising to passengers.

The VeriFone system provides a new, highly targeted channel for advertisers with the ability to deliver real time media. As well as a colour display screen for streaming media, advertisements and safety information, VeriFone’s unique card payment system also comprises of a fixed passenger facing secure PIN entry device and a driver side payment device with a receipt printer. The system has already been rolled out in some black cabs around London as the equipment, installation and maintenance are all free but drivers will still need to make sure that their taxi insurance covers the new technology that will be installed in their cabs.

VeriFone’s vice president & general manager, Northern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Shaun Burger Explains that “This is a total media and payment solution that enables black cab operators to enhance the customer experience with card payment options and access to a choice of multimedia content during their trips.

“VeriFone can also deliver interactive and dynamic cab-based media campaigns to advertisers looking for targeted, high-value alternatives to traditional venue-based and outdoor media channels.”
VeriFone has already installed their systems all around the world, from South Africa to Istanbul and New York City. In NYC, VeriFone’s taxi payment system is now deployed in 50% of taxis and VeriFone Media Solutions provide content to more than 90%.

Sound off for Legal Aid Cuts in London Cabs

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

The biggest shake up of the civil Legal Aid system in its 50 year history has been proposed this week. The Justice Secretary, Kenneth Clarke, has proposed that civil Legal Aid should only be routinely available to those who face losing their home, liberty or life.

Sound Off For Justice has created a campaign to help raise awareness and give Londoners a chance to have their say. Three London black cabs have been kitted out with iPads and iPhones and transformed into mobile ‘sound-off’ booths so that people can voice their opinions about the plans to remove Legal Aid support from millions of people. Londoners can easily sign the online petition or leave a voicemail to protest about the latest Legal Aid cuts. The messages will then be sent to Clarke in the hope that he will rethink the proposed cuts.

The three taxis won’t be hard to miss as they will carry the campaign colours of red, white and black, along with the unique Sound Off For Justice logo of lady justice armed with a megaphone. Each cab will accompany a concierge, who will inform the passengers about the campaign and show them how to use the devices to join the petition.

If you want to get involved, the three taxis have already started driving around London since 8am on Monday 16th May and will finish on Friday 20th May 2011. The cabs will cover Zones 1 and 2 and passengers will get a complimentary cab ride if they wish to leave a soundoff.

With all the high-end gadgets that the taxis will be carrying and the amount of people that will want to get involved with the protest, we hope that all three cabs have full taxi insurance to cover this event.

The Choice of Taxi Insurance

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Choosing the right taxi insurance quote can sometimes be a tough decision.  There are also numerous things your will need to consider when searching for a quote; you will need to ensure you are covered for all possibilities.

Firstly you should make sure that the policy you choose have a good reputation.  They should have good experience, enabling you to get the best possible price, cover and also advice.

Taxi

Most people tend to use specialist taxi insurance brokers, as they are usually the ones to give you the best quote possible.  You should be trying to find a quote which offers extras for example: breakdown cover, or a replacement car in the event of a crash, you can be back on the roads as quickly as possible.

Your insurance must cover your passengers not just yourself.  This is for the unfortunate event of a crash injuring your passengers; you will not want to be liable for any legal claim they could make if anything should happen on the journey.  If you can find a quote that has legal expense covered too, as this will mean you are well prepared for any claims against yourself.

As with anything, you will need to read the small print so you can understand exactly what is covered and what is not within your policy.  Your taxi insurance is highly likely to be more expensive than regular car insurance, as you are using your car as a business and carrying passengers around, but this does not mean you can not search for a better or cheaper deal.

If you have completed all of the above, you can be safe in the knowledge that you are covered fully, for any outcome that you may face whilst working.
