Mitsubish Car Motor Company
Mitsubish

Mitsubishi first began trading in 1870 as a shipping firm and was established by Yataro Iwasaki (1834-1885). A rough translation of the name Mitsubishi means ‘three diamonds' as reflected in the company's logo.

By 1881, the company had bought into coal mining by acquiring the Takashima mine, using the produce mined to power their massive fleet of steamships. Through this acquisition, the company also branched out into shipbuilding, banking, insurance, warehousing and trade. Later still and the company also diversified into steel, paper, glass, aircraft, electrical, oil and real estate.

Mitsubishi's first vehicle to be introduced was the Mitsubishi Model A, unveiled in 1917. It was to be the beginning of decades of ground-breaking design for the company, including the invention of the diesel engine in Japan, the first large-sized bus, the first diesel powered truck and the first four-wheel drive passenger car prototype.

The Mitsubishi company became so large that in the early 20th century, the company experienced its first split, which would eventually lead the company into three. The first of these was the Mitsubishi Bank, founded in 1919 (which eventually became Japans largest bank after a couple of mergers in the 1990's and 2000's). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was splintered off in 1946, after being dismantled by the Allied forces for their part in Japans war effort. The Mitsubishi Corporation was founded in 1950 after the post-war government policy of decentralizing industry, and it became Japans largest general trading company.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries included three industrial companies: Mitsubishi Motors (the fourth largest Japanese auto manufacturer), Mitsubishi Atomic Industry (a nuclear power company) and Mitsubishi Chemical (the largest Japanese chemicals company).

Japans major need after the end of the Second World War was for commercial vehicles, a situation that was compounded by a serious fuel crisis. In answer to the fuel crisis, Mitsubishi introduced a bus which could run on either petrol or alternative fuels. In 1947, an electric bus continued Mitsubishi's innovations in their truck designs. It was also equipped with an air suspension system as well as the first tilt-cab of its time. As far as passenger vehicle production at this time, it was mostly limited to Mitsubishi scooters.

Mitsubishi was a big participant in the unprecedented economic growth of the 1950's and 1960's. While Japan were modernizing their energy and materials industries, Mitsubishi followed by example and created four separate companies for all their different energy departments including petrochemicals, atomic power and petroleum in various forms. They also continued to carry on with the more traditional areas of development, including such fields as space development, aviation, computers, data communications, ocean development and semiconductors. This all went on and at the same time, Mitsubishi were also staying active in consumer goods and services.

1970 saw all the Mitsubishi companies establish the Mitsubishi Foundation, commemorating the centennial anniversary of founding the first Mitsubishi company. By the end of the decade, Mitsubishi were winning numerous awards for their vehicle designs. They won South Africa's Car of the Year in 1977 for the Galant and USA's Pick-up of the Year for the L200. The Shogun was launched in 1982 and as a 4x4 was totally different to anything seen on the market before. It became a global best-seller and took the 4x4 of the Year award in Britain, Australia, Spain and West Germany.

The Mitsubishi Corporation, a member of the Mitsubishi Group became Japan's largest general trading company in 2007. They have over 200 bases of operations in roughly 80 countries worldwide. Coupled with over 500 group companies, Mitsubishi's workforce is multinational, employing about 54,000 people. Mitsubishi have long engaged in business with many different industries around the world. Not just vehicle manufacturers, they also hold business' in the energy, machinery, metals, chemicals, food and general sectors.
