A secret meeting instigated by Toyota Chairman Eiji Toyoda marked the beginning of the Luxury Lexus range. The question that bought the meeting together was this: “Can we create a luxury vehicle to challenge the worlds best?" This prompted the team at Toyota to embark on a top-secret mission. The mission was to be codenamed ‘F1' (standing for ‘Flagship' and ‘No. 1 vehicle'). The project eventually culminated in the Lexus LS 400, the first luxury car built by Toyota.

The name Lexus was derived from an image consulting firm that were hired by Toyotas long time advertising team, Saatchi & Saatchi. They came up with a list of 219 prospective names. One of those names was Alexis which quickly became the front runner. One of the possible reasons for the popularity of Alexsis may have been due to the character Alexis Carrington in the popular TV show of the time, Dynasty. Eventually the name was shortened down to Lexus, almost like a combination of luxury and excellence. Toyota maintain there is no specific history to the name Lexus: it is simply pleasing to say and easy to remember.

The Lexus LS 400 was built during a process that involved almost 6 years of planning with 60 designers, 24 engineering teams, 1,400 engineers, 2,300 technicians, 220 support workers, about 450 prototypes and over $1 billion in costs. The result of all this hard work was a unique design which was a complete shy away from anything resembling a Toyota. It was debuted in America, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, in January 1989. Just 8 months later, a network of 73 new Lexus dealerships across the US were selling them.

After the successful launch in America, by 1990, Lexus was launched in the UK, Switzerland, Canada and Australia. The LS 400 was critically acclaimed for its silent, well-appointed and ergonomic interior, fine engine performance, superior build quality, fuel economy and value for money. It won several motoring awards when it was launched, even after some criticism over the anonymous styling and the suspension, which was regarded as too compromising of handling for the ride comfort.

By 1991, Lexus had become the biggest selling luxury car imported to the US, and they had several different models on sale there. 1998 saw Lexus launch its first luxury crossover SUV, the RX 300.

Today, Lexus has eclipsed its self and has become the top-selling luxury brand of all cars (imported and exported) in the United States. Lexus vehicles are available in over 40 countries from the Americas to Asia and most places in between. The full vehicle line-up from Lexus now includes: IS, ES, GS, and LS series of sedans, the SC convertible coupe, the RX, GX, and LX range of luxury sport utility vehicles. Their vehicles put them in a competitive market, competing against the likes of Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Saab, Volvo, Cadillac, Acura and Infinity.

More recently, Lexus has become pioneers of the hybrid car. 2005 saw them introduce the world's first hybrid SUV. These vehicles combine gas and electric motors for increased power and improved fuel efficiency. Today, the hybrid cars are available in many different models across Europe, Canada and America.
