The Honda S2000

The Honda S2000 has evolved from four decades of motorsport expertise. Almost every component is unique to the S2000. Made in Japan where the Honda NSX is built, the S2000 is designed for outstanding performance. With its’ front engine and rear wheel drive, it’s time to see if this high performance roadster can out perform some of Germany’s finest cars.
The S2000 is powered by Honda’s 2.0 DOHC VTEC engine, producing 240 PS at 8,300 rpm. This enables it to go from 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds, with a top speed of 150mph. The 2004 model has had a considerable re-vamp. A complete gearshift and brake systems overhaul being just one of these changes. Chassis, steering, throttle and clutch have all benefited from upgrades as well.
This truly is a superb driving machine and if you cannot exercise restraint, be warned, you could very well find this car looses you your licence! Even at low speeds, the engine remains flexible. This is thanks to Honda’s remarkable VTEC variable valve timing. It is also competent on most road surfaces, negotiating potholes without causing you whiplash. The compact dimensions and low weight result in some outstanding agility.
The Honda S2000 is equipped with EPS (electric power steering), instead of the usual hydraulic. This is due to the fact that conventional power steering can sap power and adversely affects fuel economy. The EPS will only absorb electrical energy when required.
On a practical level, the Honda S2000 comes equipped with a large illuminated boot incorporating 160 litres of space, central locking, remote keyless entry, glass heated rear windscreen, boot release button on both the key fob and in the locking centre consol, 12V power outlet, bee sting aerial, and a space saver spare tyre which is stored horizontally on the right and inset into the forward boot panel. As expected, storage in this little car is minimal. It comprises of two small mesh door bins, a storage net in the passenger footwell, a locking centre console which has replaced the glove box to free up more space, and a storage tray over the console which holds two cups.
As for refinement, the S2000 is readily equipped with heated door mirrors, manual air-conditioning, front electric windows, leather seats and leather wrapped steering wheel, drivers foot rest, illuminated passenger vanity mirror and leather and alloy gear knob. It would, however, be nice to not have to stop every time you want to put the sunroof up/down.
The safety and security of this vehicle has the Honda stamp all over it. Duel front SRS airbags, ABS (anti lock braking system), high level rear brake light, front ventilated disc brakes, rear disk brakes, roll over protection, anti-roll bars, rolling code ECU engine immobiliser, remote keyless entry, central locking and a Thatchham category 1 interior monitoring alarm system. It would be good, however, for Honda to have included side air bags as standard, as well as some kind of traction control.
Finally, the build quality on this car is second to none. The materials used are only let down slightly by the vinyl dashboard. It’s excellent value for money and as Honda are one of the slowest depreciating cars on the market, it’s sure to last the distance. If the engine noise and exhaust notes don’t convince the hairs on the back of your neck to stand on end….you must be dead.
