The Ford KA

The Ford KA was released on September the 11th 1996, Ford planned for this little super mini to be a big seller in their range of motor cars. Not many people know but the KA was based on the ford Fiesta MK IV model but it has a largely changed car body style to the Fiesta. The Ford Ka was first produced in Valencia.

The design of the KA was created by a man named Jack Telnack, when it was first released to the public there many people thought the design to be over the top due to its curvy edged shape.
But the Ford car turned out to be one of the best super mini's on the market as it received great press from the motoring press, they spoke of its great handling which was due to its well worked out suspension which gave it great levels of grip on the roads. The Ford KA really was taking the super mini market by storm.

Even though people loved the KA there were still some problems that they liked to moan about, firstly it was the cars very small 1300 OHV engine, a small 4 cylinder lump with not much HP, these engine was also used in the Ford Anglia.

The Ford KA had a very low selling price but it was still a great earner for the Ford Motor Company. They really didn't need to spend much to produce the car as they had many of the bits from the Fiesta. This has made the KA one of the best selling super mini in the UK with 30% share of the market.

3 main models of the Ford KA were released in the UK, they were the normal KA, the KA2 and later on the KA3 came onto the market. The Ford factories built all the cars as standard ones and it was left down to the dealer selling the car to up its grade, this saved a huge amount on the production cost of the car.

The Luxury version came with a Quick clear heated windscreen, leather seats and interior trim as well as standard air conditioning and Ka Sun Collection with a full-length fabric folding roof was also added to the range during the summer months. A revised line-up gives Ka the following trim levels: Studio, Style and Style Climate, Zetec and Zetec Climate, Ka Luxury and SportKa SE.

Ford KA Reliability Record

There aren't many things that go wrong or that owner's complain about with the Ford KA, one thing customers have to deal with is the spark plugs sealing themselves in the head and having to be drilled out, this can be a pricey garage charge, and this will only happen though if the KA doesn't have all its normal servicing.

The engine in the Ford KA does get complaints of chattering or pinging noises but this can be fixed by having the tappets adjusted, they should be set to a certain size but will grow bigger the more the engine runs. The camshaft is also known to be a problem with the tappet noises.

The big plastic bumpers on the Ford KA we suppose to be rust preventions but this just moved rust hot spots to other areas of the car like the welds under the bonnet started to rust.

As with many other cars the suspension bushes need to be replaced every three years or so, the road humps in the UK doesn't help with this on any car.

The KA's oil sump at the bottom of the engine likes to get a bit rusty and is bad cases will need to be changed, this would only really happen to very old models of the Ford KA.
