The Ford Escort The Ford Escort was the replacement to the well known and popular Ford Anglia, people loved the Anglia but it was time to move on so in 1968 Ford released the Escort to the public. It wasn’t long until the ford Escort was topping the sales charts for the car industry, there were over 2 million cars built between 1968 and 1975, the escort was a very popular car with UK households. It wasn’t long before the company Ford became the top car seller in the UK and in 1975 they were the only car manufacturer to make a profit. The Escort had become and icon in Britain and on the continent. Soon after Ford released the Escort they entered it into the world rally championships. It was fitted with a 1600 engine and the current standard was an 1100 liter, this made it very popular with the younger car market and this is how it became known as an Essex boy’s car. A later model the RS 2000 followed in 1974. The mark II was launched in 1975 and this too was a massive hit with the public, the Cortina and Granada were also launched but sales were low. In the 1980’s the Ford Escort went into the Mark III stage. The whole style and look of the car had changed, a new version the XR3 was launched for Europe but this was later replaced by the XR3I injection engine model. These models became very popular with the boy racers and joy riders out there. Not many people know by the princess of Wales drove an Escort.
