Cut Down on Unlicensed Food Vendors at the Olympic Games

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Enjoyed by many, the greasy burger vans that can be found by many sports fans could be hard to find at the London Olympics.

In an attempt to protect visitors from food poisoning and being ripped off by rogue operations, the government’s food watchdog is cracking down on unlicensed hot dog, burger and fish and chips vans at the London Olympics.

The FSA (Food Standards Agency) has given £1.5million to pay for an extra 14,700 food hygiene inspections from April to September, covering pubs, restaurants, stalls and vans across the country during the Paralympics and Olympic games.

There is an expected increase in bootleg alcohol, people serving food from their front garden and businesses stockpiling food due to delivery routes being cut, which inspectors are facing.

Hundreds of environmental health officials with be driving the force, with 10 senior officers overlooking them and providing advice and extra training to caterers and restaurants who fail additional hygiene and safety inspections.

Where public health is put at risk, tough enforcement action will follow. Street vendors that are unlicensed and without a restaurant insurance policy near Olympic venues will have their vehicles detained.

Head of enforcement and local authority delivery at the agency, Sarah Appleby, said, “London 2012 is about celebrating everything that the UK has to offer and food is an important part of this.

“We have so much fantastic food to showcase to Games visitors, and we want food business owners to ensure that everything they sell is the best it can be. It will be an exceptionally busy time for a lot of these businesses, and the FSA is providing extra support and advice to make sure they are well prepared to meet the challenge.”

Security at the Olympic Park will stop visitors from bringing their own food to the games, although people can refill their water bottles at water fountains.

Biggest Ever Restaurant Plans for McDonalds in 2012

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Fast food restaurant chain, McDonalds will be the only branded food retailer feeding athletes at the London Olympics. In 2012, they will be the official restaurant for the ninth consecutive time at the Olympic Games.

Before the Games start, the global fast food chain plans to build a two-storey, 3,000-square-metre McDonald’s restaurant in Stratford, East London at the Olympic site. The huge restaurant will overshadow all of their other 32,000 McDonalds around the world.

However, this mega McDonald’s restaurant will be one of four on the Olympic site, including one McDonalds restaurant located in the athlete’s village.

The Olympics and Paralympics Games will be held over four weeks and McDonald’s is expected to serve thousands of their famous Big Macs and French fries during this time.

This venture will have an impact on the local economy by encouraging more people to eat out, purchasing supplies, equipment, restaurant insurance and providing more jobs in the local area. The fast food outlet will be hiring over 470 staff to serve the fast food during the 4 weeks of the Olympic Games.

McDonald’s UK profits are looking beefy as a strong rise in demand for its food from existing and new customers, drove their profits by more than one-third in 2010.

In the UK, the fast food restaurant chain has approximately 1,200 restaurants, which served over 80 million more customers last year.

More than 400 McDonalds in the UK operate a 24 hour service at least one day a week and around 80% of its restaurants are open from 6am. The longer opening hours has helped and pushed more sales for the global giant.

McDonald’s UK recorded pre-tax profits up 38% to £157m in the 12 months to December, on sales up 5% to £1.2 billion. The fast food chain says that they served 25 million more punters in the first quarter of 2011.

Today, McDonalds will be revealing details of its London 2012 sponsorship and publicising further deals of its ventures.

London Olympics will bring more restaurants to London’s East End

Friday, June 24th, 2011

If you missed out on Olympic Tickets the first time round, today is the day where some people will have the chance to get tickets in the second chance sale. Despite the disappointment of people who haven’t managed to get tickets, business travellers and tourists will still benefit from the London Olympics 2012 in the long run.

The benefits include better service in hotels, improved transport facilities, more choice of meeting venues and more importantly, a greater choice of restaurants and places to eat out.

Restaurants

One of the restaurants that will be opened near the Olympic Games is Wagamama. Wagamama is a modern noodle bar who already has 70 restaurants throughout the UK. We are already fans of many of their dishes, including their side dish duck gyoza. QuoteSearcher are sure that Wagamama is going to be a popular restaurant addition to the Stratford area!

If you hear the words ‘dough balls’, most people will automatically associate those words with Pizza Express! This Italian restaurant chain which is popular with families, large groups and couples is also due to open soon.

Other restaurants that are due to open soon includes the Mexican style restaurant, Wahaca and Latin American restaurant, Las Iguanas.

Not only will these restaurants benefit business travellers and tourists, they’ll also create more jobs and increase the economy in the local area due to overnight stays, commercial restaurant insurance, people eating and drinking out and using public transportation.

London Olympics

The London Olympic will transform London’s East End where the Olympic Village and new venues are being built for the Games, explained Paul Deighton, ceo of the London Organising Committee Olympic Games 2012 (LOCOG). Deighton also explained that hotels in the Capital who are offering extortionate rates, which could discourage visitors have been “spoken to”.

Not only will there be more interesting places to visit in and around the West End, Deighton said that the LOCOG has also been working with restaurants and hotels to improve their service and levels of hospitality.
