Tasty Food Festivals in Europe

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

It’s that time of year again; food festivals are upon us, exciting many foodies across the UK. Food festivals range from a show of different foods, while other festivals focus on one type of food or ingredient. In the UK, there’s Ludlow food festival and Abergavenny food festival (nicknamed the Glastonbury of food festivals) which are both being held in September. Another interesting food festival is solely based around watercress. The centre of Alresford holds a huge street party in honour of this local “superfood”.

Food festivals occur in Europe throughout the year. Local fairs in Sicily celebrate couscous to cannoli, while Germany has been celebrating onions since 1653, complete with an onion queen!

Here are a few other tasty food festivals:

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival – 27th – 29th April – Enjoy food and wine tastings along with a firework display by Howth Harbour – There’s also a prawn shelling competition!

Nordic Championships in Oyster Opening – 27th- 29th April – In Tanumstrand on the west coast of Sweden, enjoy seafood safaris with local fishermen and learn how to shuck an oyster!

Spanish Cheese Festival – 28th April – 1st May – Taste hundreds of mouth watering cheeses in Trujillo!

Fête de la Gastronomie – 22nd September – With around 3,000 events, the whole of France becomes a giant food festival. We know that the French love their food, so this is one event not to miss!

The Great British Food Festival – 4th-5th June – If you don’t fancy travelling abroad, Walton Hall near Warrington, will be holding the Great British Food Festival, in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Pop up food festivals are supported by everyone in the food industry including restaurateurs, commercial restaurant insurance providers, suppliers, farmers and manufacturers. It’s something that everyone can enjoy!

Will you be visiting any food festivals this summer? Have you visited any unusual food festivals in the past?

Food and Festival Fun

Friday, August 12th, 2011

When we think of food at music festivals, the first thing that usually comes to our mind is overpriced greasy burgers and soggy chips. The days of bad food at festivals could be now long gone, as many of them have been offering a wide variety of delicious food, with stalls selling posh paella to gourmet sausages and traditional wood fired pizzas. Festivals have been offering so much more at their events, which has been making festival goers excited about eating!

In last weekend’s Observer New Review, Johnny Davis stated that during the peak festival season, there isn’t a single festival free weekend. A strong line up is one of the ways to make a festival stand apart from the others, but it can’t always be relied upon, even with huge acts performing. This is where food can come in.

This summer, festival and food fun has already spoilt Londoners. There have been many festivals including, Jamie Oliver’s The Big Feastival on Clapham Common, offering music acts such as the Mystery Jets, Athlete and Soul II Soul. Even though this was a music festival, food was also an important part of the event. As well as pop up restaurants from Jamie’s Fifteen and Barbecoa, there was Marylebone High Street’s The Providores, East Dulwich’s Franklins and Locanda Locatelli.

Feedback from The Big Feastival was great, which questioned the need to cater for just foodies e.g. The Taste of London festival.

Another example of a festival with great food is last weekend’s Field day which offered Clapham’s monthly Venn Street market cooking up some artisan food such as risotto balls and free range burgers from Holy Cow. There was Mexican food from Daddy Donkey’s Kick-ass Mexican Grill and a few more food stalls turned up the next day to the mini festival after acquiring restaurant insurance UK, like Meateasy Burger Truck and Apple Cart.

Camp Bestival, the family friendly festival in Dorset, has played host to a choice of delicious food for festival goers. Food workshops and food, run by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, has been pitched up at the festival for the last three years, and there was also a smaller marquee offering yummy food at surprisingly uninflated prices. There was also a bespoke cocktail bar, offering different and wonderful ingredients in their drinks, for those who wanted to escape the crowds and kids.

With the popularity of pop up restaurants, home restaurants and supper clubs in Britain, music festivals are well placed to follow the trend!

Have you been to any festivals this summer? If so, what did you think of the food offered? Let us know!

Visit some fun food festivals this summer

Friday, June 10th, 2011

It’s summertime, a great time to get out and take advantage of the good weather whilst it lasts! One way to enjoy the summer sun is to get out to a food festival and there are loads happening all around the UK this year. If you are still looking for something to do in June, Quotesearcher has scoured the internet to find a few interesting events happening this month.

The BBC Good Foods Show Summer at the NEC Birmingham (15th–19th) is a great example of a food festival, as the event will provide you with entertainment from top chefs such as James Martin and MasterChef Champions Gregg Wallace and John Torode. The show will also feature the very best fresh summer food and drink, as well as the TV Chefs cooking up dishes to inspire all food lovers. This is a great event for the whole family, as kids go free over the weekend.

Another good food festival is the Cheltenham Food and Drink Festival at Montpellier Gardens in Cheltenham (17th -19th), which is a fabulous 3 day food and wine festival, showcasing fine food from around England. Visitors will be able to meet the producers at this unique festival and discover tantalising wines from around the world. This event is great for foodie explorers looking to tickle their taste buds and learn more about food and drink.

A big food festival event is one that Regent’s Park will be hosting, which is the Taste of London Event that is happening between the 16th-19th June. This event is said to be the world’s greatest restaurant festival with world class chefs, restaurants, drinks and produce being present at the event, as well as representatives from all areas of the food industry, including wholesalers, restaurant insurance providers and business investors. If you are in the capital this summer, treat yourself to an indulgent foodie day out.

Another event in London is the brand new Farmers & Fine Foods market in Portobello Road, which will be launched on the 18th. This wonderful festival will include food from more than 30 stalls, as well as wine tasting and face painting. Farmer’s and Fine Food Market offer a wide range of quality and organic food produce to reflect today’s Londoner diverse palate. Sounds good to us!

Food festivals are a great place to go out if you are looking for food inspiration, love food and drink or just want a fun day out for the whole family! It’s a place where communities can get together and suppliers can showcase their latest food creations. The best bit is that visitors can sample and taste all the different foods and drinks!

Let’s hope that the good weather will hold out this month so foodies and families can enjoy the festivals. Which ones will you be attending?
