Orange UK Launches Quick Tap freebies for NFC Users

Samsung galaxyThe mobile network operator Orange says 200,000 customers in the UK have now been equipped with NFC phones to receive special rewards by tapping smart posters.

Orange has partnered up with EAT, food chain, to allow Orange customer with an NFC handset to get a free “Eat treat” each day from the beginning of March.

Customers just need to touch their Quick Tap phone to posters located in EAT restaurants to play a game with a guaranteed treat at the end of it, such as free fruit, coffees and baguettes!

You’ll be able to download the game from the Quick Tap Treats app from Orange World as well as Ovi, BlackBerry and Android stores.

The offer will run until mid 2012 and can be accessed by 200,000 customer swith a Samsung Galaxy S II, Blackberry 9900, Blackberry 9360, Samsung Tocco Lite, Samsung Wave 578, Blackberry 9790, Blackberry 9380 or Acer LiquidExpress NFC phone, which Orange says is set to ‘rapidly grow’.

Everyone with an Orange NFC handset will receive an SMS message to let them know about the rewards service, to help promote the programme. A marketing campaign will also start at the beginning of March.

Chief marketing officer for Orange UK, Pippa Dunn, says, “Last year we started a whole new movement in the way consumers make payments on the high street, and with Quick Tap Treats, we’re continuing this with a new and innovative way for our customers to receive rewards for their loyalty,

“So whether it’s a free coffee on the way into work, or a free baguette at lunchtime, you really do get more with your mobile on Orange.”

Fast Food becomes even Quicker with Contactless Payments

McDonaldsFast food lovers can get their food a quicker way by using contactless payments to pay.

According to Visa, in the last quarter of 2011 a third of cardholders paid remotely for food. The 2012 Olympic Games is expected to give a further boost to the contactless payments system.

The release of new technology in McDonald’s across the UK has encouraged an increase in contactless payments for fast food. According to the figures which were collated by Visa, the third of cardholders using the system to pay for food in the last three months of 2011 compares to 12% the previous quarter.

Like Oysters that are used on the London Underground, the contactless system allows users to scan their credit card over a special terminal, to pay for things up to £15. The aim of the system is to shorten queues in popular retailers, to lessen the time it takes to pay for items.

Even though contactless payments have now been available for two years in the UK, and there are 75,000 terminals and 17m cards, Visa acknowledges a low acceptance level by retailers is still preventing usage from becoming an every-day routine.

Mastercard surveyed usage in Europe last autumn, which showed that only 5% of British consumers had made a contactless payment. It was only France that came lower at 4%. Visa has refused to show figures for the total number of contactless payments.

Head of contactless for Visa Europe, Mark Austin, believes that the turning point for many cardholders will be when the Olympics take place. He said, “People with experience of contactless cards are starting to see it as the first step to the arrival of mobile payments. The more chance consumers have to use their contactless cards, the more enthusiastic their response becomes.

“For us, London 2012 will be a major tipping point with thousands of new contactless terminals installed across the Olympic venues to make payments as easy and convenient as they can possibly be.”

Other retailers who offer the contactless system include Eat, Pret a Manger, Clinton Cards, Little Chef, Burger King, Cafe Nero, Subway and selected outlets of Boots. Starbucks, the Co-op and Wilkinson will be offering the service soon, as well as other popular fast food restaurants, once they have acquired commercial restaurant insurance to cover the new technology and potentially any fraud that could come along with contactless payments.

73% of the 500 cardholders questioned in the UK believed that contactless technology would in the end, become a more popular way to pay with case, according to the Visa research.

Pizza Express launches iPhone App you can pay your bill with

The future of eating out has arrived! Yes you can now pay your bill in Pizza Express with your iPhone, there’s an App for that.

The idea behind the new App is to make life easier for diners who are in a rush. No longer will you have to wait around for the check after a meal you can simply pay with your iPhone App and leave as soon as you are ready.

The Pizza Express App is free to download and is supported by PayPal, meaning it is incredibly simple to use when paying. To help make sure it actually works, and is faster than traditional payment methods, Pizza Express have also announced the roll out of free Wi-Fi in their restaurants and new electronic point of sale facilities for this payment method.

It all sounds great and super high-tech but will people actually use it? Part of the point of eating out is to be waited on and part of this is having the bill brought to you and sorted by the waiter. Going to a payment point and taking care of it yourself has an almost McDonalds feel about it.

Also, this payment system could take away from the interaction with the waiting staff, which again is part of the fun of eating out. Will people still give a tip if they have gone to a payment point and sorted in themselves via an iPhone App? And will the waiters even receive tips through this payment method?

The other thing to consider is the security of this new process. With the restaurants using free, public Wi-Fi to aid the App people may be dubious about using their payment details on it. Pizza Express will have to make sure there is sufficient security in place to make sure payment details are not hacked and that their restaurant insurance does cover anyone who loses money this way.

This could end up being the norm in all restaurants or could just be a short lived novelty! What do you think?

Restaurants should be more innovative with mobile technology

Nowadays, nearly everybody in the UK owns a mobile phone or smartphone and won’t leave their home without one. The chief marketing officer at web-based restaurant reservations and marketing service operator Livebookings, Andris Berzins states that, “To provide a better service to customers, restaurants should take more advantage of mobile technology”.

Being able to use a mobile phone to search for a particular restaurant and access their booking page was handy. Berzins said “It’s vital that restaurants respond to consumer behaviours to deliver a high quality user experience by embracing mobile technology.

“Consumers have high expectations and demand instant access to the services and products they want 24/7,” he explained.

In May, the Livebookings Restaurant Index was launched which tracks dining trends and examines the international growth of mobile and online reservations. “Many European markets are taking advantage and benefitting from mobile technology to drive online reservations.

“Reservations made via mobiles have been fuelled by the popularity of smartphones across Europe” Berzins added.

According to the Livebookings Restaurant Index, there has been an increase of two-thirds of online booking through mobile devices over the past 6 month as 6% of all UK online bookings are made on mobile devices.

With the increased popularity of iPads and tablets, restaurants should seriously think about providing an online mobile booking system to drive more reservations to their restaurants, as it does not affect their restaurant insurance quote and may be worth investing in. Of course, people may still want to phone up restaurants to book reservations, but at Quotesearcher we believe that it’s about giving the customer different options and choices.
